Ancient Egyptian Costume

Hello everyone! This article will be a follow-up to last week's article about Ancient Egypt. The last one featured the makeup and this one will feature the clothes, wig and jewelry. This is just a short summary, it is very hard to write a short version of the complete history of Ancient Egypt. I touched on the topics I think were important to note.

Ancient Egyptian women wore long white linen sheath dress called "kalasiris". It was usually ankle length, and usually covered the breast. However there were periods of time where the dress didn't cover a woman's breasts. Linen was used because it was the most available fabric as the Ancient Egyptians grew flax. Women often wore shawls over their dress.

As I mentioned in my previous article most upper class Ancient Egyptians were bald and wore wigs. They used real human hair, horse hair or palm fibres. Wax was used to style the hair and beads and metal charms were usually used in the wigs.

Jewelry in Ancient Egypt was very important. Most jewelry was made from gold as it was mined in Egypt. Silver was not used as much because it wasn't found nearby and had to be brought in from Asia. Therefore only rich people wore silver. Ancient Egyptian jewelry featured bright stones and glass. Some of the stones used were carnelian, amethyst, jasper, lapis lazuli, and turquoise.

Most people in Ancient Egypt didn't wear shoes all the time. They only wore shoes when feet needed protection and special occasions. The upper class people wore leather or papyrus sandals.

Servants and dancers wore little to no clothing. Most dancers wore small skirts or just a large belt. However dancers would wear lots of jewelry.

Here is some examples of Ancient Egyptian clothes from ancient paintings:

Here is the look I put together on Stardoll:
