Hello everyone! How are you all? Today's article is about
the Latin American skirt called "Pollera" in the 5th instalment of my
articles about recreating folk costumes on Stardoll. Polleras are worn in
different cultures in Latin America, the most known are polleras from Panama, Bolivia
and Peru.
A pollera is a long pleated skirt made of various materials
like cotton, or wool. Peruvian polleras are very colourful with heavy
embroidery and they are usually knee length. Bolivian polleras are similar to
Peruvian ones. Panamanian polleras are very long and are usually white with
coloured embroidery.
Polleras came into fashion during colonization of the
Americas by the Spanish conquistadors. The land owners (Haciendas) forced the
local women they employed to wear polleras. Presently many women in Bolivia and
Peru wear polleras everyday, they even play sports in polleras, although very
fancy polleras with matching blouses are worn for special occasions. However in
Panama, they are only worn on special occasions.
These are examples of polleras:
This is the version I created on Stardoll:
I used: 'Jungle Top' from Folk, 'Bossa skirt' from Folk, 'Blue Grape Heels' from It Girls, and 'Sea Breeze Necklace' from Riviera
